![]() ![]() Some software makers released updates to their Intel-based versions to add support for high efficiency format. Most raw photo and video editors support Windows and macOS on Intel and ARM processors including laptops, mac Studio, and iPhones and iPads. It took intoPIX almost a year to release an ARM-based SDK (Sept 2022). ![]() The SDK (software development kit) required to process high efficiency files was initially available only on Intel-based platforms. You can learn more about this new file format here: Software makers must license it and use their SDK. The new High Efficiency raw file format included in the Nikon Z9 is built on “TicoRAW” (stands for TIny COdec) patented by intoPIX. You may wonder why it is taking (took) so long for many raw photo and video editing tools to support for the new High Efficiency raw formats. Most software makers were quick to offer support for Nikon's own lossless compressed file format. Both high efficiency formats use lossy compression and may not provide the same level of image quality as Nikon's own lossless compressed format. Intuitively the smaller, more compressed HE format may suffer more image degradation than the larger, less compressed HE* format. The "HE" format delivers a full resolution raw file at about 22 MB per file. The "HE*" format delivers a full resolution raw file at about 33 MB per file. The Nikon Z9 offers two levels of high-efficiency (“HE”) output. The Nikon Z9 offers a new High Efficiency TicoRAW lossy compressed format that delivers significantly smaller raw files with minimal loss of image quality. Nikon's own lossless compressed raw file delivers a full resolution image at an average file size of 55 to 60 MB. UPDATED: 07 July 202307 July 2023: Topaz Photo AI 1.4.0 now supports for HE* and HE compressed raw files via the intoPIX SDK.
